Ceramic Seal Faces

Mechanical Seal is one of the media sealing forms commonly used in modern industry. It refers to the use of mechanical methods to bring the sealing surfaces into close contact and relative movement, and to use the pressure of the medium to prevent medium leakage. There are many types of seal face materials for mechanical seals, and the common ones are as follows:


- Graphite: A very common material for mechanical seals. It has the advantages of high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance and good thermal conductivity, and can be used in the range of -240℃-500℃. However, graphite seals are not suitable for sealing corrosive media.


- PTFE: A plastic with excellent corrosion resistance and low temperature resistance, it is also one of the commonly used materials in mechanical seals. It can be used in the temperature range of -70℃-260℃, and is suitable for use in acid, alkali and other media.


- Synthetic rubber: one of the commonly used sealing materials in mechanical seals. It is oil-resistant and corrosion-resistant, can be used in the range of -70℃-200℃, and is suitable for low-pressure and low-speed sealing.


- Metal: such as nickel alloy, carbide, stainless steel, cast iron, etc. Metal materials have good mechanical strength and corrosion resistance, and are suitable for sealing low-speed, low-pressure, low-temperature, and corrosive media.


- Ceramics: Ceramic Seals are mainly made of engineering ceramics such as alumina, zirconia, Silicon Nitride, silicon carbide, etc. Among them, Alumina Ceramic is the most widely used ceramic sealing material at present. It has excellent wear and corrosion resistance, high hardness, high strength, high temperature resistance and other characteristics, suitable for sealing under severe working conditions such as high speed, high temperature, high pressure and strong corrosion.

Material Selection
Alumina
- 95% Al2O3: Mainly used for agricultural pumps and automobile cooling pumps.
- 99% alumina: Mainly used for external mechanical seals of acid-resistant pumps.
Zirconia
Compared with Al2O3, ZrO2 has better mechanical properties such as wear resistance and fracture toughness, so it has better sealing performance.
Silicon Carbide
For high-speed, high-pressure, high-temperature and other heavy-load conditions, choose SISIC or SSIC with good thermal conductivity. When it may suffer from corrosion, choose HPSIC with better chemical stability.
Others
E.g., the thermal shock resistance of Si3N4 is the best among engineering ceramic materials, and its performance can be maintained stable even in environments with rapid temperature changes (0-1000°C).
